Soy Candle Tips
Soy candle tips and care for household use.
Soy candles bring a charming warm appeal to any home. There are
several tips available to making your soy candle experience more
enjoyable and fulfilling.
When I first started using soy candles I
just thought all you had to do was simply light it and enjoy
them. All I had on my mind was enjoying the soft warm flickering
glow of candle light. Since then I have figured out that a candle
will last allot longer when you pay special attention to it.
All of
the candle tips I have discovered are from my own experiences of trial
and error and sound soy candle tips from my friends.
I didn't have any idea about trimming
wicks or that it was a good idea to burn it for a certain amount
of time. It's a good idea to burn your new candle about an hour
for every inch in diameter. When a friend first told me this I
thought she meant how tall it was. When I figured out how long
to keep it burning I was way off!
The first time it's lit you need to make
sure to let it burn out to the outside edge of the container the
candle is in. This will completely liquify the melt pool and helps
the candle to burn completely and not leave a big hole down
through the center. This was one of the problems I had when I was
using paraffin candles. It also didn't help that I didn't know how
to properly burn them.
Before you light your candles each time you
should make sure to trim the wick down to about 1/4 of an inch. Some
people even trim it to 1/8 of an inch. I've found that 1/4 inch
works just fine for me and my candles. I never used to trim the
wicks. I always had an uneven burning candle with a large flame. I
quickly found out that a candle is supposed to be a candle and not a
flame thrower!
Sometimes your candle will smoke after it's
lit. I have found that most paraffin wax candles do smoke after
they're lit. If you are using a soy candle and it still smokes
extinguish the candle immediately and check for anything that may
have fallen into the melt pool. This could be wick trimmings,
matches or other things. When my kids were little they were
always putting things into my unlit candles.
It wasn't unusual to find spare change or small toys inside my jar candles.
I have also seen dust collect inside of candles that
didn't have lids and also on pillar candles. When ever my candles were
dusty I would just wipe it with a damp rag.
It's a good idea to check for dust in open
candles. The smell of burnt dust isn't good and will cause the
candle to burn uneven. If you use a forced air heater or a pellet
stove like we have the dust will collect faster than you can clean
it!
Always use candles in a well ventilated
area. Don't use candles in small confined
areas. Consider the area you are going to be using it in. Is it
drafty? A candle will burn uneven if it's placed in a draft. Never
place a candle in front of an open window.
The slightest breeze can and will blow your
curtains into the flame of your candle. Not only does it burn uneven
it's also a fire hazard!
Never ever place a candle around any
flammable objects! Never burn candles near anything that might
catch on fire. Don't ever place the candle on a shelf that's under something else that might catch on
fire. Never place any candle directly on your
furniture. All candles should be used in a proper holder
specifically meant for the type of candle you are using. An ill
fitting candle can be tipped or knocked over and cause a fire.
Always follow soy candle tips and keep your family safe!
Never ever leave a burning candle
unattended. Keep your lit candles with in your site at all times. Never
move a candle after it's lit. The holder and melted wax are hot and
there is a really good chance it will spill. If
you are using a grouping of candles allow at least 2-3 inches
between each one. The combined heat from all of the candles can make the containers
crack.
Always keep
lit candles out of the reach of your children and your pets.
This is probably the most important of the soy candle tips I can
give.
Never leave matches or lighters where
children can get a hold of them. They know how to use them by
watching you. My oldest daughter tried to sneak a book of
matches and a candle into her room when she was about 14 years
old.
I had always told all
my children that candles could be a dangerous hazard if not used properly. Children don't always
listen. Some of them think that they're smarter than their parents and don't have
to listen to what we say. You can talk to them
about soy candle tips and candle safety but sometimes they just don't
listen.
She knew this was off limits! She had found out where
I kept the matches. She was old enough to know better
and chose to do it anyway.
After that I kept the matches in a place that only I knew
where. I told her that she needs to listen to all candle tips and advice I
had given her about being safe. I told her rules are there for a
reason. Also being grounded for a while makes them a little
bit more receptive to the rules!
Never use a candle as a night light!
While you are fast asleep the candle is slowly melting away and
getting ready to start a fire! Have you ever seen someone who has
been burnt in a house fire? I have. I can only
imagine how horrific and traumatizing it is.
Teach your whole family about soy candle tips and house fires. Candles
and cigarettes are among the number one ways house fires start. This
is something that needs to be taught over and over again until your children
remember. Children have short memories and even shorter
attention spans some need to told several times in order
for the soy candle tips and safety advice to stick.
I read some where that people needed to use common sense
while using candles. It kind of irritates me
when I hear people say this. Common sense isn't something
that you just know. It's something that you learn.
It's an acquired knowledge. We
learn this by the mistakes
we
make. Even then some people still don't have
allot of it! Even if people pay attention to your
soy candle tips sometimes the candles gets forgotten about.
Never leave your candles burning unattended.
Children and pets are naturally curious. Children love the warm
flickering glow of candles. They seem to be entranced by the flicker of the flame.
When they're small they're always sticking their little fingers where they shouldn't. If
you use a soy candle the wax doesn't
get as hot as paraffin but can still make them
uncomfortable, there is also the open flame to consider.
When your candle gets burned down until
there is only about 2 inches of wax left on the bottom it's a good idea
to discard it. Never allow the bottom of the wax to completely liquify.
This causes too much stress on the glass
candle container. The heat of the flame and melted wax
may cause the glass of the container to crack.
When you are ready to extinguish your candle don't blow on the
flame. I used to do this and it always made the melted wax
splatter. You should try using a candle snuffer.
If your jar candle comes with a lid don't use
it as a way to snuff out the candle.
Always pay attention to soy candle tips when burning any candles.
Store your candles in a cool place away
from excessive heat when not in use. Pillar candles tend
to melt if the room temperature is too high.
Always read and follow the advice given on
the candles warning labels.
It's there for a very good reason! Pay close attention
to the soy candle tips on the warning labels.
The
manufacturer of the candle you purchase always has very useful
information and soy candle tips on their web sites.
As With all candles please be responsible
and keep out of the reach of children and pets
